Luigi GS500E 1991

Hi, apologies for asking something that maybe was already answered... but I cannot read German...
I'm a proud owner of a GS500EM (1991) which I love but become a bit unconfortable due to the handlebar position.
I've seen here:
http://gs-500.info/index.php?title=Lenkerstummel_und_Stummellenker
that there are some handlebar risers which could make my bike more confortable.
Where can I purchase those?
Is any other modification required?
Thanks!
Luigi

Hi!
Which risers exactly are you referring to? I'm assuming you're talking about the risers which are 2,5cm, 5,5cm or 7cm high, respectively. Those are in fact standard risers used on the GS500E, depending on the model year. AFAIK the 2,5cm risers were only used on the 1989 model and are therefore very hard to get these days... since your bike is a 1991 model, I suppose you have the 5,5cm risers on it. The 7cm risers were used in later models (again, AFAIK) and are often sold as used parts. No other modifications are needed for any of the three sizes.
You might try ebay or register here and put up a search request in our marketplace (http://forum.gs-500.de/forumdisplay.php?f=51).
Keep in mind though that even with the higher risers, the handlebars will still be swept backwards at the same angle as before, and if it's the angle that causes your discomfort, you should probably consider installing a superbike handlebar instead. This is not very hard to do by yourself, but it needs a little more time, parts and money... Plus there are some minor modifications needed as for example the brake hose might not be long enough...

if I am not mistaken from model year 2001 the GS500 has a standard naked bike handlebar if I am not mistaken.
By the way, where are you from? As you're having an european model I guess form europe 8-)
Usually those handle bars the GS 500 91 comes standard with, aren't the problem, as with higher speed, the wind takes a lot of the weight of your wrists, but with a windscreen, they can be a problem

Thanks all for the answers.
I'm from Italy :-)
The problem is that it's a bit too low so my (old :-( ) back is suffering. I noticed that just rising by a couple CM would do the trick.
So you think I should have the 5cm version and I could go for the 7cm?
Thanks a lot

either that or you Switch to a Superbike Handlebar...
http://www.motorcycle-road-and-race.co.uk/images/gs500e-bar-conversion.jpg
Thats what i did on my 1990s GSXR and it was the best decision ever.
Since it's changed the bike feels more like a touring bike than a racing bike.
Totaly recommend something like that...

That would be great.
Do you know which parts I should purchase or ... for the previous option where I can find the 7cm risers?
Thanks

For a Superbike Handlebar you could call:
Fabbris Moto S.n.c.
Via Don Gregorio Segala 42

Tel. +39 045 8902408
e-mail: info@fabbrismoto.com
website: www.fabbrismoto.com
They are italian buisness partner of a company called LSL.
LSL produces the nessassary clamps to fit a superbike handlebar on the GS-500.
Alternative you could call LSL directly and ask them to speak english.

All right.
Usually the first thing you are expected to do, is to write a thread about who you are, where you're from an so on..
Here's the right category:

Ok, started getting in touch with SLS but I'm quite concerned that they are not sure about my version of handlebars....
I might need someone speaking German :-) ...

If you just want higher riser for your current handlebars, open a thread in the Marketplace (http://forum.gs-500.de/newthread.php?do=newthread&f=51) and post the picture from wiki so everybody knows which riser you want.
I guess the shipping to Italy will be more expensive than the risers...
So check out ebay.it. You know how the riser look like and I bet theyīre offered right now.
If you want an even more comfortable position, you should change to a "superbike" handlebar.
http://www.ebay.it/itm/ABM-Superbikekit-Comfort-GS-500-E-GM51B-1988-2003-278-/311605558019?hash=item488d237b03:g:md4AAOSw44BYQDp n
German dealer but with included shipping to Italy.
Edit: Oh, there is the handlebar missing...just riser and brake line.
So better take this offer
http://www.ebay.de/itm/ABM-Superbike-Lenker-Umbau-Kit-fur-SUZUKI-GS-500-E-/270689119468?hash=item3f06542cec:m:m_CIsZDaWmgJ1LM tYAc1iBg
(shipping is 22,50€)
There is a chrome or black steel handlebar included (aluminum is 10€ extra but you can choose the colour), the riser for mounting the handlebar and the longer brake line (different colours available, if you want the line coated itīs 5-10€ extra).

Thank you both.
What do you mean with just risers? Is it possible to increase the height on the two half handle bars without changing the handle bars themselves?
Thanks!

these things are risers (see picture)
luigi
09.03.2017, 18:45:36
Yes sure.
My style is the one on the left (two half handle bars).
The total height (from side to side) of mine is 7.5
Is there any taller one already existing? That would be definetively the easiest (and cheapest) option...
Thanks

depends on why you want to change it... most people want a different handlebar on the gs500 because their wrist is hurting.
And that's not only because of the height but because of the angle...
Also... Superbike handlebars are way cooler ;)

If you donīt already got the tallest riser then you can easily change them. The only "problem" that can occur is the hole for the fittings (so they wonīt turn). If thatīs the case you just drill another hole or cut off the pins of the fittings. With some tape underneath they fit tight enough again and wonīt turn.
You saw the pictures of the different riser?
http://www.gs-500.info/index.php?title=Lenkerstummel_und_Stummellenker#Le nkerklemmb.C3.B6cke_der_GS
Just compare with it yours.
The tallest riser were attached from 1996-2000.

Thank you both.
Reason for changing is not so much the wrist but the back.... so even if the position remain sporty for wrist, I have the feeling rising a couple of cm will make it much easier for my back...
The superbike handlebar is, yes, cool, but I would keep it as last resort as I'm a kind of purist :-) : I'd like the bike to stay original as much as I can.
My GS500 is 1991 and as such I should have the intermediate risers: good chanches that the solution for me will be the higher risers.
Questions:
1- how can I be sure I have the intermediate ones? What should I measure?
2- where can I find the new ones?
Ebay? I'd need anyway a hand because most of the offers are in German :-(
Original parts (even if a bit more expensive, unless prohibitive, I'd also take this into consideration...)
Thanks!

Check the pictures in the link. They are quite different so that you can keep them apart.
If you need measurement: the tallest riser is 7,5 cm from above the triple clamp to the middle of the hole for the handlebar. (the intermediates have 5,5 cm)
btw: itīs not only the length that differs itīs also the offset, so your backīll be even more straight.

Wonderful!
It looks like the best solution.
Yes mine (1991) are 5.5 measure in that way.
I've seen those:

They should the tallest ones, right?
Thanks

Thank you all:
I've got those higher risers from ebay, had them powder painted and now they are on the bike!
Didn't try a lot as I've got it back only today but it looks MUCH better!
Grazie!
