USB Adapter

Hi, while being at the risers update, I decided to buy this USB charger and have it put on the bike:

I've been reccomended to NOT attach it directly to the battery as, even if it has no leds, it could drain power.
So the mechanic attached it "under the key" so it's fully switched off when the key is not in...

Now the problem is that it works BUT ONLY if the lights are off...

Any idea?

My guess is: the negative lead of the USB adapter is connected to the positive lead of the Lights.
So if the lights are turned off, the current flows through the light to ground and the USB adapter works.
But if lights are turned on, then the potential of the negative lead is actually +12V and so no voltage across the USB adaptor's converter circuit.

Looks like you'll have to visit your mechanic again.
I'd recomend to wire the usb adapter to the battery with an extra switch and a extra fuse mounted hidden to the frame. Thats what i did.
Of course you may not forget to turn if off again.

Or you connect it to your lights so it's turned on when you turn on the lights...

thanks for the answer.
Yes the issue was the ground wire not properly connected.
Now the device is connected to lights wire and it works whether lights are switched on or off.
The mechanic removed the USB device fuse (which makes me a bit worried) but he reassured me that in worst case the lights fuse would take action and avoid any damages to the bike electronic... fingers crossed :-)
