problem - my engine sound

Hello, i have problem with my gs500. listen it on my page http://jerzy.wz.cz/motor.wav
Can you tell me where is my problem?
Please, dont speak german, i dont understand and my english is also VERY easy, sorry.

is steuerkette endless chain or not? (i think when it leaves factory in GS)

I cant give you better sound, only from my nokia 6230, sorry. but what is important in that sound is clacking in cca 1 second interval.

another, longer soundfile where You rev up the engine would be a further help.

When i rev up engine, everything is ok. i can hear it only on neutral(idle running) or when rev down(turn off gas).

Lay the bike from left to right. Does the sound change?

I forgot something, when i start engine, sound is clear, my problem appears only with warm engine.

you could check, or just replace (it's not that expensive) the cam chain tensioner... a friend of mine blew his out once, and it had about the same symptoms as you are having (rattling in low rpm, running fine at higher rpm)

Another indication for the camshaft axial clearence.
If the clacking disappears when laying the bike on the left or on the right side (with the feet on the ground ), then it's perfectly normal. Well, not perfect, but normal. Just get used to the sound, it won't do any harm to your bike.

Yes, as said before:

Sounds occuring only in warm engine conditions is - let´s not say good, but - better sign. Quit possible due to wrong adjustments made.

A rather loud, metall sound repeating up to 3 times per second is axial clearance of the camshafts. They bounce from sides to sides making that noise.

If you hear high frequent "click" sounds, the cam chain (stearing chain) which drives the camshaft might not be configured the right way. And the valve open/close not exactly the way they are supposed to do.

There´s the possibility, the chain longened due to wear, or the camchain tensioner might have a scratch (change!).

You might want to go to a dealer and get that check, since broken camchain tensioners can lead to fatal engine failure.


...Or the clearance for valve adjustment are WAY out of tolerance, this is eligible for home-checking. Check the video below!

EDIT: Some members of quite bigger experience than me wish to have a soundfile, that covers the whole bandwidth of rpm, including reving up the engine and so on.

Hi, im here again. As you said i did before few minutes. I layed bike on the left and on the right side and sound was clear(after 5km)! Im not sure if i good understand you. You say everything is ok? Not perfect but ok?
I also checked valve clearance - ok
cam chain - ok

yes, thats what he mean

as in the other tread described: it's possible to get some spacer-plates from suzuki to minimize the gap/play at the camshaft.
